Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH)

Benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) is not cancer, but can cause significant urinary symptoms in men, such as urinary frequency, urgency, very slow urine stream, even inability to urinate (urinary retention). This condition can be treated with medicines, office-based treatment procedures, or hospital based sugical procedures. At Comprehensive Urologic Care, our physicians are trained to use the full array of treatment options for this condition.

Laser Treatment of Benign Prostate Obstruction

Prostate obstruction due to benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) can cause significant urinary symptoms in men, such as urinary frequency, urgency, very slow urine stream, even inability to urinate.  This condition can be treated initially with medicine.  However, if medicine is ineffective, surgical treatment may be necessary.  Historically the gold standard of surgical treatment is transurethral resection of prostate (TURP).  In recent years, TURP has been largely replaced a laser vaporization technique, which can achieve same result as TURP, but with much less patient discomfort.  This procedure can be safely performed in an outpatient setting, either in our office or in hospital.  In recent years, approximately 350 prostate laser vaporization procedures have been performed by physicians in our practice (90% by Dr. Wu).  This procedure can achieve significant improvement in patients’ symptoms.
